We get asked all the time what is there to do around here? The new thing to do for tourist and locals alike is to take to the air. A great way to see Sarasota and it's beautiful beaches is on a helicopter tour from Florida Suncoast Helicopters.
Brett and I recently took a tour with Robin Cooper pilot of their newly formed family business Florida Suncoast Helicopters. With sons Robin & Brian as pilots and parents Bill & Sally on the ground taking care of the business end of things, the family has brought Sarasota a fun new activity too add to the sun & fun things we can do here.
It was a beautiful morning we took off from Dolphin Aviation located at the Sarasota Airport. Almost immediately, upon departure we could see two notable, local landmarks come into view; The John and Mable Ringling Art Museum and, Ca D'Zan, their recently restored Venetian style mansion on the bay. Continuing along the bay front, We could see Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, commonly referred to as ?The Purple Cow?. Next we see one of Sarasota's nicest hotels the Ritz Carlton. At this point, a turn to the West takes the flight over the new Ringling Bridge and out to St.Armonds Circle and Lido Key. I looked down at the bay and seen what I would call ?a flock? of sting ray's, they looked like birds the way their fins flapped in the water, there must have been a hundred of them. Robin also spotted a Manatee which I would have never seen if it wasn't for Robin's trained eye.
Turning to the South, after crossing over Big Pass, the gorgeous white sand beaches of Siesta Key appear. From here we could see our WORLD FAMOUS CAPTAIN CURT'S CRAB & OYSTER BAR, another Sarasota landmark, we like to think so anyway. Then the tour makes its return to the airport by flying along the bay front at Big Pass and over Bird Key. As the mainland approaches, downtown Sarasota and the Sarasota Marina are just ahead as we have the airport in sight and head back. Having only seen Sarasota and Siesta Key from the air in a commercial airliner, seeing it from a helicopter is a whole new experience. The thing I found that made this so unique is your flying low & slow enough to see and experience the beauty of the area.
The ride was very smooth and not loud at all, with microphone headsets on we could talk to one another just fine. To put it in a nutshell it was a BLAST! I will defiantly do this again and highly recommend it to anyone. Brett & I would like to thank Bill, Sally, Brian and Robin Cooper for a fantastic ride and a great time!
